bad IE QFE that left a corrupted Exception Component...?

Suhail investigated this and believes the following should fix you up:

Run Regedit.exe and browse to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ExceptionComponents
Delete all the subkeys under the above key that have FriendlyName as
"Windows Media Files".

Then reinstall the player - does that fix you up?
