corrupted audio in avi or wmv files, with sp2

Here are the specs for my pc, if it helps.
Sony Vaio model pcv-rx752
2.0 ghz P4 processor
64 mb geforce 4 gfx card
soundblaster 16 pci audio card

When I play any compressed file format at all, my audio sounds all garbled.
It started happeneing last month when they released the final version of sp2.
HELP!
