Yikes! That doesn't sound very helpful...
Here is what I would try. (This is by no means guaranteed to work. Try it
at your own risk. ...You might even want to wait and see if you get any
more 'expert' answer, because I'm not an expert on this stuff either!)
Download the full install for WMP10 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/download/download.aspx
Install that *over* whatever you have going on right now, and then try the
burning process. If it doesn't work, it might at least correct whatever the
problem is that causes WMP10 to not appear in Add/Remove Programs, so maybe
you will be able to properly uninstall.
If it lets you uninstall, maybe your WMP9 will work! Not likely though --
you will probably need to re-install WMP9 'full version' -- although where
you will find that at *this* point is a mystery to me. I'm sure there are
people out there that have it, but you may have to do some searching. I
doubt MS will be very cooperative about sharing the old version with you at
this point...
Also, in response to your original question -- there are plenty of programs
out there that will burn CDs: Ahead Nero, Roxio EZ CD Creator, Musicmatch
(I think), etc. But each of these programs has its own quirks too. When
WMP says 'another component caused a problem', it could be referring to a
DLL/driver that came as a part of some other media player/burner program,
and chances are good that if this 'common component' (as they are called) is
causing a problem with one program (WMP), it may cause problems with
others...
And finally ... again -- if it's been a while since you had a clean install
of Windows, this might be the time to 'bite the bullet' and do it.
Not very helpful, I know -- but there is so much 'behind the scenes' that
can go wrong with this stuff, it is often just best to cut your losses and
start from scratch, which you *know* will work...
Try this stuff and report back! Also, try Googling that error message, and
include the word 'burn' -- you might find some info. Also you may want to
check this site: http://www.msmvps.com/chrisl/ and the WMP FAQ
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player/faq.aspx) to
see if there is any mention of a problem like yours.
Good luck!
