WMP9 hangs for minutes while "opening" files

My media player has started to temporarily "hang" when i
try to open files. It will say "opening media" and will
do nothing for 10 minutes then the file will come to life
and play.

Using latest ver of WMP9, Win 98SE, PEntium 4 2.4 GHz with
all the fruit.

This problem is common to all media files not matter the
location (desktop,CD,Hard Drive, Internet etc...)

If I try and play files via other software (Quicktime,
MusicMatch

Please help... I've tried...

-Rolling back to WMP7 then 6
-Reinstalling WMP9
-Removing all other programs except essentila windows
programs
-Yelling and Screaming

It just won't get better...
