Can only play WMV video files in windows media player...

I can't play AVI files or MPEG files in media
player.Every single one i try to open WMP says its
corrupt or not a valid format or something.It'll play WMV
files fine and all my different audio formats fine, just
not any video files. I have tried downloading codec packs
and that still doesnt work.I'm not sure but i think the
problem started when i updated my NVIDA driver using
windows update, so i rolled back the driver and it still
doesnt work.I am using windows xp, with the latest
versions of directX and Windows Media Player.Please Help!!
