Brian -- here are some of the troubleshooting steps I've used to assure that
the multicast stream is functioning:
1. verify that network team can see the multicast stream on the network
(router & switches)
2. verify that any Rendezvous Point (RP) routers are passing on and/or
receiving multicast stream
3. verify that there is no packet fragmentation occurring - use Ethereal or
other packet sniffer to see packets to client PC using WMP - if fragmentation
occurs, see below:
4. other network checkout:
a) If some clients experience 'server busy' for multicasts, may be related
to fragmentation of packets or Q.O.S. issues. Items to investigate: verify
that from a network routing QOS perspective that streams are not set to
lowest QOS priority - per Microsoft, acceptable to have some items (e.g. IP
telephony set to high priority, as long as stream data is not set to low
priority)
b) for fragmentation, check at what point fragmentation occurs, and set the
encoder session (v9: Properties > Advanced > Maximum Packet Size) to
appropriate max packet size - based on using ping -L <packet_size> -F <ping-
able_IP_addr> , and seeing when framentation occurs - for our purposes, 1250
looks like a good size, and our twork team personnel state to not go above
1500 bytes for packet size - may vary depending on network config/hardware
c) check w/network team personnel which IGMP version is supported on the
network -- if v2, on streaming server multicast stream properties, set to use
ANY IP ADDRESS rather than a specific IP address -- v9: Properties Tab >
click to highlight category "Multicast Streaming" > click "Properties" button
at bottom > Advanced Tab
Per Microsoft, if set to a specific IP address for a NIC, then WMServer
will attempt to use IGMP v3
4. verify that the IGMP/CGMP router tables are clean - should only have the
current live streams when network team views multicast information on the
routers, by issuing:
show ip mroute
show ip igmp groups
May also need to clear the router multicast groups, as static IP addresses
for multicast streams are not automatically cleared - must be done manually
via:
clear multicast router all

5. one other thing I've seen is if laptops are inadverantly running both
wireless and wired NICs at the same time, it's very confusing to the WMPlayer.
Hope this points in you a direction that is helpful.

Hi. I have a customer that we have setup a multicast system at. I can watch
the multicast on the media server itself and on nearby computers on the same
subnet, but I can't see it on a computer on the network after a switch. The
nework guy swears that the switch is set up correctly to allow multiast
traffic. Windows media player receives the multicast, thinks its playing, but
the screen is black except for a rare still frame. Audio plays in small bits
interspersed with silence. Looking at statistics, it shows that available
bandwidth is unknown, but that the bandwidth in use is 281k. The bitrate
should be 2 megabits, not 2 kilobits.
Everybodies pointing fingers for two weeks and nothings getting fixed. Does
anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Brian
