WMP only plays first stream in WSX on WMS

Hello,
I have a publishing point with it's source set to httpd that references a web page that genereates a wsx playlist with 2 elements:
<smil>
<media src="\\nas\ident.wmv" noSkip="true" />
<media src="\\nas\890.wmv" />
</smil>
This seems to be working on most configurations on windows, on linux it only plays the first element then stops, it would be nice to know why it doesn't play on linux but it's not the real problem (tested with xine, mplayer and vlc).
Got a support email yesterday from a customer that is using windows xp with ie6 and wmp11, the symptoms are the same like some1 using linux or flip4mac, the first element plays, then it stops. I checked the server logs, when the first element is served, it says that the host is using mplayer2 (which i think is strange) and Cstatus is 200, but when the second elemnt is served most of the fields in the log for that row show "-"s and c-status is 408.
I could only find this article relevant to this error http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q256277/ but it doesn't provide a solution, I dont have load balancing, the player is embedded in a web page, and the client is behind a firewall but what needs to be done to the firewall? open a port? (i dont think it's a firewall problem since the first video plays fine).
any hints or help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Seif A.
