OK.. I know this is possible (some how) as others are doing it.
What I want to do is do an "On-Demand" encoding (high quality 3Mbps) to an
end user at a specific bitrate (lets say 300kbps). I also want this user to
be able to seek to a specific spot in the encoding. When I encode content
and send it to WMS (Push), Windows Media Player has no indication of the
duration of the video clip, and can't seek to a specific spot. And if they
could, how do I tell WMS to tell the encoder so seek to a specific location?
I'm not sure I'm reading what you put correctly. If you mean "Can I
get WMS to fast forward a running encoder to a point in the future",
of course this is impossible. The Orb couldn't do that either, if the
content was a live broadcast stream - you can't move the media player
past the current encode point due to laws of physics ;-)
Like I said, I know this is possible .. Take a look at Orb (www.orb.com).
They do it with on demand encodings that you are able to pause and seek, and
according to the headers of the server, they are running Cougar 4.1 (Windows
2000's Media Server). Is this only possible with custom plug-ins on the
server, or perhaps some behind the scenes packet manipulation???
So they have pre-encoded the content, and they are using "Play While
Archiving". That implies they aren't actually on Win2000 and are
spoofing server headers to confuse you. There's an article about how
to enable this feature by modifying the server namespace on MSDN :
