Hi Alan
I myself have just gone through this same situation. I
would highly recommend this book from microsoft, windows
media resource guide. I have included the amazon URL. New
$59, used $7.75. Buy used its almost always brand new.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-

I found out a few things.
1.The files you serve up work dramatically better if
encoded by windows media encoder. This includes live
broadcast.
2. Thanks to Ravi when setting up publishing points use
the "on demand" feature. After I found this out it worked
great.
3. If you are behind a cable or dsl modem/firewall make
sure your ports "pass through". Email me if you need help
with this. If your server is on a static IP then to test
you can use the ip address to test i.e.
mms://207.224.##.###/nameOFfile
It seems simplistic to say this but sometimes the smallest
things cause the biggest problems.
4.I had a problem serving up video until I installed the
IIS internet services that came with Win server 2003.
This may or may not be an issue but it was for me.
5.Make sure you start your Windows media server. Open
media server, right click, start.
6. "Allow connections" on the "on demand" publishing point
(right click). Oh yea, if you don't have a publishing
point set up. Run the wizard.
7. If for whatever reason when you set up the publishing
point and it gives an error when finding the path you your
file, but the test files that come with it work, re-encode
your file. Four hours figuring that one out,(idiot on my
part).
8. Files work best if they are in the Window media root
folder.
9. Be aware that professional microsoft phone support
starts at $245. So that nice $1000 you spent getting the
software doesn't include help with it. Your on your own.
10. RAVI from Microsoft is da man. Two weeks of fustration
and refusal to pay $245 for help, was solved in two emails
from this Newsgroup.
