This appears to answer all of my questions about the file
types, but do you know if the Media Services SDK has
anything about available web services for WMS? I'd like
to pass a publishing point and retrieve all of the
available content.

WMS9 provides objects to query and manage it which are
documented in the SDK. You will have to write the WS
yourself using those objects to perform its task.
