No, I can repro it using media player 7 and 9 here so it's not version
specific. I'm still trying to determine if the duration tag is used by
the player or the server. A contact suggested that the server makes
use of this to optimise the stream (he proposed it's possible the
server loads only part of a file in response to a duration tag in the
ASX, passed by the player)
I'll try some experiments but I'm really pressed for time right now in
a development project, and it takes time to set up several streaming
servers and test/record their responses against a range of players ;-)
