6.4 authentication

I'm using msdxm.ocx 6.4 in vb.net accessing remote wma/wmv files. It worked fine until I tried to restrict access to the remote directory via authentication. The server is running IIS / ms server 2003. I couldn't see how to send the username and password so I just tried it as is. The 1st file appears to buffer up, then it hangs until it times out, at which point it plays the audio and fires the error event, which I handle. All subsequent requests work fine. I'm surprised that it is allowing access to a restricted directory without any authentication, though poorly. Is it saving the info somewhere in the registry? What is the relationship between wmp6 and IE in terms of remembering authentication?
When I tried the file in mplayer2 it never requests authentication, but wmplayer does. Am I going to be forced to use wmp9 to get this to work?
