Check for indexing programatically?

If an encoded file isn't properly indexed, the encoder was
interrupted & the file is bad... So can I just check for
the index from a script or program?
I looked at the ASF specs from
http://www.microsoft.com/asf (referenced elsewhere in this
newsgroup), I couldn't make head or tail of it.
