Hi Zach,
Just so you and others know, in case anyone else might have this
problem and
search the site for suggestions: After everything, something very
simple
that *no-one* suggested solved the problem, for most of my wma files.
I updated everyting I could on my computer at the microsoft update
page,
including my browser, to version 6. (I have Win 98 SE.) Then I
completely
uninstalled my firewall and antivirus, which was McAfee, and I
installed
Lavasoft's new firewall.
Suddenly, now when the digital rights management page tells me the
lisence
has been saved, it actually has. No more error messages. No idea why
this
worked, but do I care?
I have my music back. Boogie.
Nicole
hey there, nicole! and to others: i still have most of the original
CDs that i purchased, but i am so lazy that i did not want to have to
rip every one of them AGAIN using MS's nose-in-your-face DRM license or
jumping through any other hoops. programmers are INHERENTLY lazy, uh
huh...
so, as of 9-24-09, you do not have to uninstall Mcafee or any other
firewall, nor do you need to change your firewall.
you just should not be using IE8, because you will get attacked by
trojan horses if you do. strip it using add/remove programs and you'll
revert back to IE7.
as to trying to get license migration using firefox (the best browser),
you will get an error saying that you do not have the proper microsoft
plug in, which means that you will remember, d'uh, i forgot, i MUST use
that blasted IE7 to do this. so you hold down your key that looks like
the windows logo and press the "d" at the same time, whereupon, you are
at your desktop and all the other things you were doing using firefox
are minimized. (i think firefox programmers don't even bother with the
DRM issue anymore--they are too busy fixing true bugs).
then you open up IE7. you paste in the address that was in your
firefox box when you had tried to get the license using firefox, into
IE7.
then it's simple:
go to internet options. open up the last tab, which says "advanced."
then, the last category on the list has a line that you can click to
"on" to allow programs to "run active content," which is the same as
allowing an active X. (when you got error 438, i'll bet that the notice
was up already telling you that you had to run an active x, yes?). save
your changes, shut down icky IE7, go to your media player 11 (you don't
need to download to 10), and:
bingo! let's rock!
