Yes, the device you referenced is the type that I have. I understand that
the
compression rate affects sound quality and that there are different
formats
to use for recording as well as play back, but what I'm not really sure
about
is how to tell WMP to rip at what rate or in what format (WMA, MP3, MP4,
etc). There is no prompt that asks for this info when I put a CD in my
drive
and I'm not completely sure how to navigate thru the player's tech
settings
or help files to find the info I'm looking for. Is the info you supplied
about the audio format (CD-DA) from CDs the same for all CDs? If so, will
the
info you provided be applicable to further rips that I perform? I
appreciate
your help and am thankful for your time in answering my posts. Thank you.

OK, first lesson: Don't top post.
See how I'm replying to your question as a follow-on.
I've snipped the rest of post as it is fully covered in the thread.
You post a question or response, and subsequent replies are as
follow-on's. Not top posted as that throws the whole thread out of
sync, and makes it tricky to follow.

The type of CD:
CD-DA is the format used for audio CD.
There is also, and to keep this simple, *Data* CD's
These are disks that you author as a data CD, it can contain a mix
of anything you wish to archive from word docs to jpegs, MP3's etc.
It is still not fully clear what sort of CD you are ripping from, but
assumed you mean music CD's from your own collection of which you
wish you to rip specific tracks to your portable media player.
Then yes, we are indeed talking about music CD's of which the content
will be CD-DA (Compact Disc Digital Audio).

To use WMP 11 is simple, and there are plenty of online tutorials
to guide you. This is Microsofts guide to ripping using WMP 11

This is a two page guide, scroll down to goto page two and how to
set what format to save as, bitrate, quality settings etc

Apart from the clumsy but functional WMP and/or the software bundled
with your portable media player, there are any number of free tools and
applications you can download for ripping/encoding/converting.
This is just one example: CD ripper and converter

This is a screengrab of the dialog to rip the tracks from CD

And you can also see the audio converter tab.

Just import the ripped tracks from folder where you saved them,
and you can configure, but to make it simple it also has presets -
To bottom left of screen you'll see "Output format" drop down menu
where you can select type - WMA, MP3 etc etc
Then a drop down for quality setting etc.
It really is very simple, you can save direct to your connected
Sausa or to a HDD folder.

The reason I like this tool, not only for it's simple but fully
comprehensive functions, but......
This is a sore point with some, but many recordings have DRM
(Digital Rights Management) a copy protection that prevents copying.
This software disables/defeats such DRM on any recording encoded
with copy protection.

The only way to learn is to practice/experiment.
Regardless which you chose, WMP11, or the Sansa software or the
poikosoft tool, you have to practice with configuration settings.
A 4 min CD audio track will be ripped as fast as your drive can read it -
usually 40x, if you applied too much compression, and on playback
the sound quality is impacted/degraded, then just delete it and try again
with a different compression setting.
