Thanks for the fast reply. I did check as you suggested.
Nothing shows under now playing, plug-ins,options, for any of the items you
suggest. all are blank windows to the right.
FFDShow appears NOWHERE - and definitely not on the task bar near the clock
when the video is playing. I guess it isnt installed? So, I should somehow
install this plugin? FFDShow?
When I click on options,DVD,advanced, I just see 'sonic mp4 demultiplexer'
I put a png of that output on my public skydrive 'dvd-options.png'

Appreciate your help. windows media centre playing DVDs is of course
horrible looking as well.

OK so it looks to me like WMP11 is using some form of video.
enhancement - typically I'd call that 'extreme sharpen' or 'edge
detect'.
That's not an enhancement built into WMP but I suppose it's possible a
plugin is causing that. Have a look under Now Playing at the small
dropdown menu, then Plug-Ins -> Options
Go through to see ifd there's anything listed and active under Now
Playing or Window, Video DSP and so on.
A more likely scenario is the FFDShow plugin which doesn't appear
there - it's on the DVD options when you click the Advanced button.
You'd usually be able to tell if FFDShow was running as 1 or 2 [FF]
icons would appear next to the system tray clock on your PC - it may
have been installed by MPC or by some other codec pack you've added.
In that case I'd look through the FFDShow configuration screen (More
Options -> DVD -> Advanced) and turn off any video settings there.
Possible settings to check might be postprocesing, sharpen, warpsharp,
DScaler filters and so on. Just uncheck all those top level boxes for
now to disable the settings until the picture is unprocessed.

all. I am viewing the videos at their original resolution. I think the best
way to describe it is with a picture. What I have done is done a screen cap
(not the best way - but it definitely shows the issue), with the same video
running on from left to right: VLC, WMP11 and Media Player classic. As you
can see from the image, all is ok EXCEPT for the WMP11 version.
(I hope the link to the microsoft skydrive public directory works!)

The video quality from WMP11 is very bad compared to other video players on
my system (VLC) and 'mediaplayer classic'. Is there any way to update the
codecs perhaps for WMP11? Refresh the WMP11 install? I know i can't remove it.
In what way is it "Bad" ? Have you got the Zoom settings (on the small
dropdown menu below Now Playing) set to other than 100% ?
Or perhaps the resize player to video / resize video to player are
checked and you wanted them to play the video at its actual size.
In either case, expanding a video more than its actual size is a good
way to show up badly encoded / converted video blockiness.
