Sherlock http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html or
GSpot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ should be able to find the
on-disk location of the Vaio decoder file, though I'm not sure how
much help that will be ?
These things are generally 'installed' or registered with the system,
so as well as having a file on the computer, there are registry
entries describing how the player(s) should use it - I'd check in
add/remove programs rather than just removing the file itself.
You're right - Sony support is rather badly regarded, considering the
premium they charge for their kit.

Thanks so much for getting back to me Neil.------------------------------------------------
The PC is plugged vian an HDMI cable into a Samsung LCD TV and sound comes
through its built in speakers. I'll try your suggestion and report back.
Once thing I have noticed though is that Sony's own "Vaio AC3 Media Decoder"
is listed in the installed programs list. I can't find the actual file name
so it's a little difficult to track down where exactly this resides on the
machine and the Uninstall/repair option only offers "completely remove this
program" when clicked - so no possibility of repair it would seem.
If its this that's busted, where might I get a replacement? I googled it
and came across an installation file on the US Sony support site but when I
tried to install it I got a "this can only be installed on Windows Vista"
error (weird given I'm running Vista!) so no dice. Sony support Europe don't
seem to be able to help either.
Thanks for your help so far.

From your description, you're sending audio to the HDMI output cable.
Do you have an HDMI capable sound processor plugged into that, in some
sort of home entertainment system ? Otherwise, switch to regular
surround or stereo sound on your Sigmatel device if you're expecting
to connect speakers directly to the PC.
If you can't find that in Control Panel, go to WMP pick any of the
small dropdown menus (e.g. below Now Playing) then More Options ->
Devices; Double-click speakers and configure them to use analog audio
output.
You seem to have at least 2 DVD audio decoders installed (Intervideo
and Sonic) and I'm not sure what interaction they might have. Probably
it's better to have just one - if pushed, I'd use AC3Filter by
preference but you probably already havae appropriate software by the
look of it, to decode DVD audio.

I have a Sony Vaio VGX-TP2S running Windows Vista 32bit SP2. I have a------------------------------------------------
Blu-ray combi drive and below I've pasted the WMP 11 support info.
When I first got the machine over a year ago I was able to play DVDs in WPM
11 and through the Media Centre with no problems. However now when I play a
DVD I get the picture but no sound. This also happens with the bundled
"InterVideo WinDVD BD for Viao" software.
All other media plays fine - CDs work and so do all formats played from the
HDD. The general PC audio is also fine. The only sound that doesn't work is
the audio when I try to play a DVD.
Initially I thought this problem might have been caused by ffdshow (which I
installed recently to fix a DVD burn error I was having) however I
uninstalled this but the DVD audio problem has persisted.
I tried the AC3 audio filter fix that's mentioned elswhere on this forum but
that didn't work. (I downloaded the filter from here
http://ac3filter.net/index.php?name=Sections&req=viewarticle&artid=5) I have
since uninstalled this too.
I also tried a System Restore but this failed due to an "unexpected error"
and I have no other restore points to choose from.
Finally, I'm not sure if this is related but when I open the Vista sound
hardware manager it shows that my default device is:
Digital Output Device (HDMI)
SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC
Working
but I also have listed:
Speaker/HP
Realtek High Definition Audio
Not plugged in
and:
Realtek Digital Output
Realtek High Definition Audio
Working
I would be really grateful if anyone could tell me how to fix this issue.
Cheers
