Re: Playing From an SD Card

Neil:

I note that there is another similar Oct. 2008 thread on the same topic.
They share the same frustration. Here are my thoughts:

1- A file manager should be easily able to handle removable media. Both XP,
Vista and Pocket PC file managers do this perfectly.

2 - J. River Media Jukebox does this perfectly with removabale media, so it
can't be that hard.

3 - Microsoft does this perfectly with removable media in media player
mobile for pocket PC, despite the fact that the computing and memory
horsepower are much lower in that Pocket PC environment.

So there are many examples outside of WMP where this function is done well.
Yet it seems to be deliberatly turned off in WMP. That is the mystery.

Cheers,

Why does WMP 11 (and 9) not allow you to play music from an SD card?

I have a new netbook with a solid state C drive (SSD) of limited space. It
is wasteful to have to transfer music to that C drive rather than play it
directly from a separate SD card. Its not a performance issue, since I can
play any song by picking it from the Windows XP file manager. However, all
the wonderful lists, random play and jukebox functions of WMP 11 are
seemingly turned off. It can't be a complexity problem since Windows Media
Player for Mobile PC does these functions perfectly in a much lower
horsepower processor.

I am had to download J. River Media Jukebox 12 to the netbook in order to
play from the SD card. Why did you disable this feature in WMP 11?

If I remember previous discussions, it turned out it's beacuse it's on
completely removable media that might simply disappear from the PC
when unplugged.

The library database is used to keep track of where files are stored -
but if they're held on a removable SD card and you stick another one
in of the same size with the same name, the entries would show up at
the very least broken in the library (WMP would spend all its time
adding and removing the content from the library)

The shuffle, playlist etc, seem to depend strongly on the library
database functionality. So it would break if WMP did this. Possibly.
