Re: song length issues

Hey Zach,
I'm not an expert, but I think I see length data in ASFView.
WOAH--While preparing to upload a file for you to examine, I tried opening
it one last time by right-clicking the file in Explorer and choosing "open
with Windows Media Player". Lo and behold, it had length information! I
could seek!
So now I have two copies of the same WMA file, and WMP shows track length
data for one but not the other. The only difference between them is that one
is in my WMP Library, and the other isn't. Hmm....
Based on this, I'm guessing the Library stores length data discovered at the
time songs are added to the library, and in my case, empty or invalid length
data was somehow stored in the Library for all my WMA files. (This
hypothesis assumes WMP won't recompute length data for the file it's playing,
even if it finds nonexistent or invalid length data for that file in its
database.)
Assuming my hypothesis is correct, perhaps the real question then is, "Why
isn't song length data being added to my Library database when I rebuild it?"
If you still want to examine a sample WMA file, I uploaded one here:

Put one up at YouSendIt or MegaUpload so I can take a quick look at it with
ASFView. Or you can do that yourself. =)

Hi Zach,
I'm having a similar problem: I ripped a bunch of CDs with WMP 11 into
standard WMA format, and after rearranging the folders on the disk with
Explorer, there is now no song length data anywhere in my library, so when
playing I can't see track time remaining, nor can I seek within a track.
I tried renaming the folder containing the Windows Media Player database
as
described in your WMP FAQ, but even after rebuilding the entire library,
no
length data was added. :(
I also tried "indexing" some of the files with Windows Media File Editor,
again as described in your FAQ (though that was for ASF files, not WMA,
but I
tried it anyway). This also had no apparent effect: when I played those
files in WMP 11, they still had no length data and could not seek.
Anybody have any more suggestions? What I don't understand is why Winamp
can figure out the total track time in my WMA files, but Windows Meda
Player
can't--even though it created the files in the first place!

Darn, I was hoping I'd see a red flag there. That actually sounds fine.
But if you rename the library folder (shut down the Windows Media Player
Network Sharing Service first)-
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary
and let the library be rebuilt, do things work from there on? If not,
just
rename the new folder and replace it with the original folder. =\

Basically it is all My Documents... My Music, My Pictures, etc. All
of
my
music is in My Music, and it is also the default rip folder.
