When I sync songs to my ipod that I have burned from cd's to my computer,
they do not play on my ipod. It lists them as having been sync'd though in
wmp. The copy protect music option is (and always has been) off and wmp is
set to check for any updates on a weekly basis. I currently cannot download
any more songs from itunes because it says there is no more room, and
considering the fact that I've only downloaded maybe 50 songs from itunes
onto my ipod it has got to be referring to the songs that were sync'd from my
computer. (However, the songs that came from itunes don't show up as being
on my ipod when I'm in wmp and the songs that came from my computer don't
show up as being on my ipod when I'm in itunes!) Help! Please! =)
Note: If as the last sentence implies you are using the syncing ability of
both iTunes and WMP then you should not as they will constantly overwrite
each other. I also presume you actually mean ripped from CD to your
computer.
WMP can 'rip' in two formats, MP3 and WMA. Of these only MP3 would work on
an iPod. WMP itself cannot sync to an iPod, but there are now utilities to
add this ability to WMP, e.g. Xplay and Dopisp.
However if the source of your music is audio CDs, and as your message above
implies, you are also using iTunes on the same computer, then I have a
suggestion for an alternative approach.
iTunes, can 'rip' your audio CDs in a variety of formats, MP3, AAC, Apple
Lossless, AIFF, WAV. Of these three (MP3, AAC and Apple Lossless) can be
fully shared with WMP and synced to an iPod. I therefore suggest you
consider doing the following.
1. Rip your audio CDs in to iTunes in either MP3, AAC, or Apple Lossless.
Note: Apple Lossless is the only lossless format that can be fully used in
iTunes, AND Windows Media Player and on an iPod.
2. In order to share the music with WMP you will need to add two free pieces
of software, a plugin to let WMP read MPEG4 meta-tags and a directshow
filter to let it play them. See my article on this page for details
http://www.thewelltemperedcomputer.com/SW/WMP/FileFormat.htm
Note: If you use MP3 you do not need to install ANY extra software
3. Tell WMP to add the iTunes folders to its library. You can even tell it
to permanently monitor the iTunes folders for new files. I prefer to
manually add new (albums) to prevent WMP messing up.
Note: You want to tell WMP to not copy the files, and to not change existing
information.
I have all my music in iTunes in Apple Lossless, shared with Windows Media
Player AND Media Center 2005, and I can use iTunes to sync to my iPod
(actually an iPhone). I am using WMP 10 and I have zero problems. With this
approach I have a single copy of my music files shared between iTunes, iPod,
and WMP and no conflicts, duplications, etc.
