Re: How To play mp4 on wmp 11 vista edition

It tells you it *can't* play that type? That would indicate that the file
type wasn't registered properly by your plug-in/filter.

I didn't have a problem with WMP until I install the ffshow codec. This in
turn introduced me to mp4. file types. Now everytime I try to download a
video WMP till me it can play that type of file. How do I change the file
type download to something that will work with WMP. I don't recall
changing
this setting and now I can't understand why my (vista laptop) download mp4
files and my (desktop XP) will download in mpeg. How do I do this. I would
rather not add an additional players. Please help thanks

this matter will be greatly apprieciated as this issue is really
getting on
my nerves.

There will be two aspects to this.

1. You need a plugin for WMP to let it read meta tags in MP4 files
(whether
they are AAC or Apple Lossless does not matter as both use the same file
and
tag format).

2. The .m4a file type needs to be properly entered in the registry with
both
a "Content Type" and a "PerceivedType" entry. Often the plugin mentioned
above will do this for you.

There are two such plugins both free, there is WMPTSE available here
http://wmptagext.sourceforge.net/ and this one
http://www.softpointer.com/WMPTagSupport.htm I get the impression from
some
comments that this second one works a bit better in Vista.

You will of course also need a directshow filter for AAC and/or Apple
Lossless (depending on which you are using).

If rather than AAC or Apple Lossless music files, you actually mean MPEG4
and/or H.264 video files then the plugins will not be needed but you will
need to ensure that .mp4 is also properly listed in the registry (like I
described for .m4a). You will also need a MPEG4 video directshow filter.
