Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Thanks again Neil,

Unfortunately, none of this worked. I wonder, can I just uninstall WMP 11?
Once done, then install an earlier version, such as WMP10?

Do you have any audio at all on this PC - e.g. can you hear the
windows startup sound , mouse clicks in IE and other system sounds ?

(That's just to check if the sound card is working properly)

If you head for the Start menu, choose Run then type in

CMD

On vista, go to the Start menu, type CMD into the Search box then
right-click the black command window icon and choose "Run as
administrator". On Windows 7... who knows LOL.

Press enter and wait for the command line window to pop up.
Run the system file checker : type in this then press enter

sfc /scannow

You'll probably have a couple of minutes to wait while that checks
system files. Let it repair any it lists as broken or modified. Leave
that window open for a little while...

Retry WMP, then head to this page and see if the button there is
clickable (in IE, a single browser window only, with WMP closed) :
http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite/en/indivit.asp

If it isn't, try the DRM reset steps listed on Zachs site :
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#indiv

You can paste the relevant command line for your version of windows,
into the CMD window - then press enter. Re-try WMP.

Next, have a try at re-registering possibly broken WMP components :
Again in this command window, work through each of these lines,
pressing <enter> after each one and wait for confirmation :

regsvr32 msdxm.ocx
regsvr32 wmpdxm.dll
regsvr32 wmp.dll
regsvr32 wmploc.dll

I guess if none of that has any effect, it's probably time to go to
the pub :-(

Thanks Neil,

I went to your station (that is the sort of thing that won't work for me). I
get a WMP error message ("Windows Media Player encountered a problem while
playing the file. Click web help...") which takes me to a WMP list of things
to try (see my original post).

It isn't just radio stations; it might be a video clip attachment to an
email, etc. that don't want to work.

thanks,
Eric

Thanks Neil,

I did what you said, uninstalled the only Codec-y looking thing I had in
Add/Remove software (XP Codec Pack); then went to
http://ac3filter.net/project/1/releases and downloaded AC3Filter 1.51a
Installer. Installed it, then when it asked me for choices, I chose
everything (choices were such things as 'AC3filter direct show', 'AC3filter
ACM' and 'translations'). Reboot. Still no internet radio (via WMP); but DVD
sound is fine.

Internet radio returns message, "This media appears to be unavailable...do
you wish to attempt to reconnect?"

Probably it would help to know something about the source of the radio
(i.e which website it's on) - or is it in the media guide ?

If you go to http://somafm.com/ find the Lush station, then click
either of Windows Media: 128k 32k links : Does that play ?
