Re: capture streaming TV from NDR.DE

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Having looked at that further, the streaming isn't windows media (the
subject of this newsgroup) but Flash video, using a customised (adobe)
flash player.

I tried to capture the session details using Fiddler2 proxy, but was
unable to get any details of the video source, as Flash was bypassing
the browser proxy settings.

That probably implies it's using RTMP(T/U/S) protocol instead of the
more usual HTTP protocol. There aren't currently many good RTMP
proxies around that I can think of, nor any whic hcan capture the
streaming traffic reliably or with easy configuration.

So I guess you'd have to find another page which isn't Flash Player,
or be unable to download the content

Oh, I wouldn't know then - it's "all change " for Windows 7 (you never
mentioned that before) and I haven't had time to check out a lot of
the common software yet.

Given that it's a Beta, you should report these software
incompatibilities on the Beta connect site.

VLC should usually work - I'll try to check the URL next weekend when
I might be able to grab a couple of hours (LOL)

Other than that - can't really help, we're on our own with this one
(the purpose of a Beta ;-)

Neil,
Many thanks. Have downloaded, installed VLC which couldn't work with the
same URL which I fed to WMP. The RokuRadioSnooper is not compatible with
Win7 (wouldn't install the dll for the network engine).

I appreciate all of the help since I'm really flying blind in this area.
Much terminology and many concepts to learn and grasp.

I'll hang in there and get back with you when I've got a working solution.

Oh yes, the "location" given in the Properties for the library playlist
entry I use for access to the NDR livestream is:
http://www1.ndr.de/flash/mediathek/videoLivestreamPlayer.swf?img=http://www1.ndr.de/mediathek/defaultbild18_v-original.jpg&file=ndr_nds_hi

Thanks,
Karl

Frequently I watch live programs from ndr.de. I would like to be able to
capture the program so that I can play the program back later.

I can presently view the live programs in the Windows Media Player by
selecting the Window Media format, as opposed to selecting Flash Video.

It's quite a hard one to answer. Not reading German, I found it hard
to understand the site content and find video to view.

I assume you mean you currently watch online rather than have access
to TV over satellite in addition to online.

If the video is a link in a web page which opens in media player,
often it will be a file stored on a web server. You can then
right-click the link, and choose "Save As" to save the file for
viewing.

If the video is live then it's not likely to be downloadable by
right-click (or download will not result in a usable file)

So one possible approach is to "discover" the URL to the media stream
: http://www.roku.com/support_sb_dwnld_radiosnoop.php can be used to
list streaming media links when you visit a web page in your browser.

You could then consider using VLC (VideoLan player) to capture the
stream URL - see http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

In many cases you would still have to sit at the PC to capture the
program, and it may only be delivered in "real time" e.g. a 1 hour
program takes 1 hour to download, depending on the media server used
to deliver the video - especially and naturally if this is live video
that will be the case.
