Yeah, I'd revert that too. It sounds like one of your drivers is locking up when WMP tries to access it - that's one of the few ways Task Manager wouldn't be able to shut the player down. So if you don't have a driver update available for your video card and audio card from your video card and audio card vendors, your system might indeed not be compatible with the newer player that was released a couple yars ago. =\
How is trying to take over your system? I understand what you're saying about it locking up, but I don't understand how it's taking over your system - or why it would want to.

I have this same problem when I upgraded to WMP11 (XP), except, that it is
also trying to take over my system, it wont obey commands, I have to manually
go in and quit the process.
It even wont listen to the windows task manager when I try to quit it there,
I have to open a third party manager to get it to listen to the quit command.
Honestly, I am about to revert my entire system to before I went to WMP11,
it is not worth the hassal.
I suppose it would be better if Windows actually helped out people who used
their software, but they only do that if you want to give them more money.
