Re: Windows Media Player on 64 bit Windows 2008 Server

Is there any (supported) possibility to install Windows media Player on
windows 2008 Server without installing the Desktop Experience?

Note: There may be very good reasons not to install everything that comes
installed with this feature to keep the server mean and lean (you don't want
to install Photo Gallery or Messenger on a server!), while there may be
reasons to install Windows Media Player on a server (such as verifying
distribution points on a Windows Media Server).

Cheers,

The OP talks about attempting to install the WMP 64bit installer package on
a Windows 2008 Server 64bit system.

The player you are referring to, no matter how you refer to it, is indeed
installed with the Desktop Experience role. I simply dislike having to type
out long strings. But for precision: If you wish to install Windows Media
Player 11 on to your 64bit Windows 2008 Server system, install the Desktop
Experience role onto the server. =)

See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.

That's a pretty bad plan. =\

Why not just install the Desktop Experience role on the Server as you're
supposed to if you want the player? =) That is after all how the
Windows 2008 Server player is made available... =)

The OP asked about how to install WMP Pro 64-bit. I have never even heard
of Windows 2008 Server Player. But I have to agree with your point : why
even bother installing it (WMP) anyway on WS 2008? He did not explain why
he wants to install it on WS 2008 or why Server player does not meet his
needs. Maybe he never heard of WS 2008 Server player either. Thanks for
the reply.
