Are there finger print smudges or scratches on the surface of the disk?
DVDs use pits that represents the data that are about 10 times smaller in area than CDs, so they are not as tolerant of finger prints and scratches as CDs are.

When I insert the disc, the drive starts reading normally... But keeps on
reading and reading. I've waited quite a while, but the drive hasn't
recognized the disc. With one disc the drive made a lot of noise, and when I
ejected it in fear, the disc was still revolving with quite high velocity.
The name of the drive is TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H653L SCSI CdRom Device,
hardware management shows no errors. The driver is dated 2006/06/21 and has
version number of 6.0.6000.16386. Region code is 2.
Most DVDs work fine, but some the drive simply can't seem to read. Booting
doesn't change it. Certain DVDs work, certain DVDs don't.
Examples of those DVDs:
- Movie called "Underworld" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320691/)
- Brand new Dimmu Borgir live package "The Invaluable Darkness"
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Invaluable_Darkness), of which neither of
the DVDs work.
- Some others, but I'll stop the listing.
Underworld DVD has region code of 2. The Invaluable Darkness DVDs have
region code of 0 (all). I've looked carefully at the details of the discs,
but I can't seem to find anything which would explain why just those DVDs
won't work.
So... Any ideas? I would really like to watch all of my DVDs. The drive
should be capable, right?
