Your video card and the control programs that come with it determine
if and how you can output video to another monitor or TV set through
video monitor connections, s-video or composite video for TV, etc. How
you make these settings depend on your graphics card and the programs
that come with it. For instance my computer has a card which allows
connection to one or both a video monitor a s-video TV output. There
are different modes for displaying , such as clone, extending the
display over both the monitor and TV, etc. You likely need to go to
the web site of the maker of your graphics card, look up your specific
card, see if there are driver updates and take them if so, and
download detailed instructions for adjusting the output to the
monitors. This can vary quite a bit for different graphics cards and
even for the same graphics card after a driver update for it.
I never was happy with even an s-video output to a conventional TV,
although it will work fairly well for the low resolution videos
typical on web sites.. I recently bought a 40 inch HDTV from Samsung
that has a conventional video monitor input. The easy way to get this
to work is to buy a "Y" video output cable which you plug into the
video monitor output of the computer. Then you plug the input to your
computer monitor to one side of the Y and a new monitor cable to the
other side of the Y and run it to the TV. These special Y and long
monitor cables can be found on places such as Amazon and Ebay at a
reasonable price. A special monitor switch might be a bit better, but
the Y worked well enough for me. You also will need a long stereo
audio cable to run from your computer to the TV with mini phone plugs,
or adaptors for these, at both ends of the cable.
At least for my Samsung, the adjustments needed after connection were
fairly minor. The screen position only had to be adjusted a bit to the
right on the computer monitor, and only very minor adjustment was
needed on the HDTV. For most computers, except a few of the new ones
with wide screen monitors, you need to set the computer input for the
TV for 4:3 aspect ratio, or images will be stretched.
I have a wireless mouse and it will work several feet away from the
computer. I am considering a wireless keyboard. Then I can easily surf
the web from an easy chair or sofa. The wireless keyboards and mice
often must have their receiver, that is connected to the computer, no
more than about 6 feet away. However the receivers connect to the
computer with a cable that can be extended, if needed, to place the
receivers within about 6 feet from where you plan to view the TV when
using the computer. I find the HDTV TV a better monitor than the one
on my computer. For those few sites that use a microscopic font size
or have text that is low contrast, you may either sit a bit closer to
the TV or select a larger font size on your browser.
