Re: Why is Audio Distorted When play speed above 2.0

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Yes, the "green" portion does indicate a limitation. But now the proverbial
hungry consumer bear has been fed a crumb (it works sometimes above 2x) and
it is hungry for more.

To re-summarize:
Some files (same encoding, bit rate, etc.) will play at 3x without
distortion, some will not. (Appears to rule out hardware issue)
Some computers will play these files at 3x without distortion on one
computer but not on another. (Appears to rule out software issue)
Both GOM Player and KM Player will play wmv files at 3x without distortion.
So I suppose because of the green bar between 0.5 and 2x this isn't a bug,
but it is a feature that as far as I can tell many don't think goes far
enough.
3x-4x is a great speed for audio/video viewing, usually of training
materials focused on Microsoft development technologies. MS has everything
to gain and nothing to lose but a DSP engineer's time for a month by fixing
this so it works at 3x-4x.

After that clipping would be acceptable as the audio content isn't likely to
be understood by mere humans.

I believe that the Play Speed Settings have the 0.5 through 2.0 speed
settings in one colour, and the other speeds in a different colour, which if
I recall correctly is meant to be a visual indicator that those other speed
settings may not function correctly with your content.

As such: this seems like a potentially unavoidable problem through the
player.

I don't know if this helps, but I have the same problem on a homemade
desktop
running XP Media Center. My laptop (Lenovo X61) running Vista does not
have
the problem. I am using the same mp3 files (recorded lectures) on both
computers.
It is bizaare because at playbacks up to 2X there are no "clicks", but at
2.11X the "clicks" appear.
There is no such problem on my laptop at any playback speed.
Any insight is appreciated.

Cheers,
Phil

Reply 2 of 2 so far.
See my first reply to your most recent post in case you missed it.

FYI - I am not the only one to notice this problem above 2x.
It is mentioned on the following article here:
http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2007/08/overclock-your-audio-learning/

I wish I could send you one of these audio files, but I believe they
are DRM
protected.

OK I'll try to reproduce it on the weekend.

If you could do me a favour, this will eliminate several possible
variables : Burn some/all the tracks to a CD and play that back.

So far so good (if the audio checks out OK on playback)

Now use the Rip tab to rip the CD back to media player, and try the
tracks played back again at multiple speeds.

I'm trying to eliminate (a) encoding settings and (b) DRM with this
test. As I say, it's not something I've experienced, so I might have a
go myself over the weekend (though it's my birthday so plans might go
awry !)
