Probably you're missing a specific decoder ("codec") for the AVI file,
which you had for a different AVI file.
The codec used varies from file to file, but is frequently DivX :
http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/
That's not available for automatic download (should be available in
WMP for windows 7, eventually) so grab it from the site above as a
shortcut, and see if it helps.
The GSpot program http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ can help to identify
the missing codec, so if you opened the AVI with GSpot, ask it to
render the file and then post the video codec "4CC" value that GSpot
shows, we can fix you up with something to play it back in media
player
