Virtualdub works like a charm for still editing. Thanks!
I am going to try the vidiolan program next.

this site may be of use to you for converting VOB files for use with Movie

Hi there-
Ok, I have found that the movie player built in to the system (acer emode)
will play a dvd. I also realize that the file format is vob in this
instance.
So the WMP will not recognize vob, and the movie maker (which I want to
use
in order to isolate frames) will recognize sound, but not video in the vob
clips.
Do I need to convert the VOB for movie maker. In which case I will have to
use another program like AVI and save to disk in that format?
I'll have a look at the VLC in the meantime.
Thanks for your help.

Personally, I do not have many problems with WMP 10, but a few avi files
would not play correctly with it.
I was directed to the VLC media player for Windows which cleared the
problem.
Give it a go - download from the following link:-
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
This is not anti WMP as I still use it, but only for mp3 and wma files.
For
everything else, I use VLC.

How can I reinstall/uninstall WMP?
Would there be another program I could use?
Registry?
Problems with ITunes?

No, I think codec packs are pretty badly done and generally a horrible

Previous to this I hadn't installed anything, so I wasn't able to
unisntall
it. I did install ac3.5b and the player ran a dvd once, and then I
get
the
resolution thing. Do you think I need a codec pack?

If you installed it via a codec pack, it could have been installed

If you uninstall it, do things work?

all right then, I've been trying to do my homework reviewing and
posting
on
forums (such as ac3) in order to find out what file version I do
have,
as
I
am having a hard time finding it. The best I can come up with is
a
version
0.0.0.0. reviewing windows movie maker settings... When I look
for
the
file
in windows system32 it is not there...
I'm a newby but can't help it.

Which decoders are you using according to WMP's

Hi RickR
I have windows vista home basic, DVD drive. WMP used to
work.
I'm
wondring
if the NVIDIA updates have affected the registry.
I have been experimenting with DVD decoders to make some
videos.
I don't know how to find out what version of WMP I am
using. I
was
looking
through some forums to see about updating the WMP and have
downloaded
but
not
yet installed cumulative updates. Do updates include newer
codecs?
Could
the
problem be the older Dell monitor, and the NVIDIA updates?
Working on this slowly.

Hello Sapper, my name is Rick and I work with the Windows

and would like to offer you some advice. There are several
reasons
why
you might not be able to use the Player to play a DVD. The
following
are
the most common reasons.
A compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your
computer.
. A DVD drive is not installed in your computer. (Most DVD
drives
have
a DVD logo printed or embossed on the front of the drive.)
. Windows XP is not installed on your computer.
. Windows Media Player 9 Series or later is not installed
on
your
computer.
Additionally you can download a DVD Decoder from this
