Re: WMP 11 Library does not add all wav files

Hi Jean, and hello to Vincent and Zachd.

I would like to add my 2 cents worth to this discussion. Awhile back I was
doing what you were doing (editing info while in the player for .wav files)
and I learned the hard way (as Zachd has said) all the editing goes bye bye
upon transfer to a new drive (I was transferring "My Music" folder to a new
internal hard drive to save space on my :C drive and discovered alot off my
editing turned into Unknown Artist/album). Every edit disappeared. And I had
alot (100 albums worth) of info go bye bye. To clarify what I believe Jean
was doing was editing each individual entry as it appeared in the player, not
using the "Tag Editor". If you single click a song in the player that entire
line becomes hilighted. Then if you single click again you can edit that
entry. It works for the song title, contributing artist, and composer, but
not for other columns. However Zachd is right that this actual does nothing,
well almost nothing. If you NEVER move your "My Music" folder then I believe
you will be OK. The library, I believe, will show ALL your edits. However, if
you should move your "My Music" folder to a new Location (Drive) then all
your edits disappears. It would be a shame to lose everything after spending
the time to input accurate info. However there is a saving grace here. Since
Jean has ROXIO, two of the Modules ("LP and Tape Assistant", and "Sound
Editor") can provide limited Tagging of .wav files. You Can Edit Song,
Artist, Album, Genre, Track No., and Year using the Roxio program (I have
EMC8 and has been using "LP and Tape Assistant" to Tag LPs and tapes I
converted to .Wav Format). After placing these songs into a Folder of the
Album name I drag and drop it into the Drive being monitored by WMP (under
the artist ). I then open WMP, go to "file" and then "Add to Library". After
WMP completes search, new entries are shown in the player. I then do a "Find
Album info" which activate the "fai.music.metadataservices.microsoft.com"
search and the info for that album shortly appears or a more refined search
may be needed to find Album info. After clicking "finish" the player
properly shows all the additional info that wasn't there before (ex. album
art, composers, etc.). Trying to use the "Tag Editor" simply results in the
"grayed out" box Vincent/Zachd has mentioned and you have seen (all because
of .wav). WMP appears to recognise some of the Tagging that can be done with
the roxio program and via the metadata search the additional info can be
obtained.

Also FYI Jean, I used 3 different method for burning CD and come to the
conclusion (IMHO) that using Nero (came with burner I installed) is the best
way to go. Although you can burn using WMP, any CD player that support CD
Text will show Unknown Album/Track 1,2,3etc. The WMPCDText plugin only works
on a PC. Both Roxio and Nero has CD Text capabilities, but Nero has more
options. The Options is why I prefer NERO.

Finally, and I believe Vincent and Zachd can help here..... I seem to recall
reading a post where it was mentioned that you can "backup" the library info.
I believe it was in reference to "play count" or something else, but wouldn't
this also preserve all the "edited in the player" info Jean mentioned? Also
I noticed that ".Wav Tagger" has been mentioned. OK does anyone know of one?
Thanks for the help in the past Vincent/Zachd. I advise everyone to check
out the links they provided to better understand metadata. ( Hey Vincent!
The tibbit regarding " wavspec" support for wav tagging was interesting).
Sorry for the long winded input!

Not sure if this is what you mean. If in Windows Explorer, I double click on
a .wav file that is in a folder monitored by WMP and for which I've
previously done my edits, it opens and plays in WMP, since that is the
player associated with .wav. I show the now playing list in library view,
the fields I'd edited show the info, right click on the file, click advanced
tag editor, the info also still shows.

I also tried something else. I copied the same .wav file to a folder not
monitored in WMP library. Opening that copy in WMP, the fields I'd edited
are blank. So the info is not embedded in the file itself, but must be
somehow stored in the library database. Whatever, I've not lost any of the
info since WMP 11 final came out and I'm happy with what I'm doing, as far
as having the info in WMP's library is concerned.

For creating audio CDs, I don't use WMP, but Roxio software. That has its
own tag editor (it appends an ADS file, but this is not seen/read by WMP)
and allows me to add the CDtext to the audio CD (which WMP can read with the
WMPCDText plugin acvtive).

What happens if you view them from Explorer?

Since I'm wholly unaware of any post-rip WAV metadata write-out, I would
think that your "solution" is only doing temporary memory-only writes that
could go away at any point. Thus causing you lots of grief.

I don't think I could be any clearer than I have ben that WAV is not
designed for great metadata, and that using the player to edit WAV
metadata is a path to failure and misery. If you really believe you need
to manage metadata in WAV files, the player is probaby not your best
solution since it is not going to do it. AFAIA.

I don't have a second PC to try that, sorry.

What happens if you copy them a second computer? Do you see the edits
there?

Most of my music files are .wav. I have always edited things like
Album, title, contributing artist, etc. in a playlist, using the right
click edit. Then they show up correctly in the library views also. I
then remove them from the playlist and access them from the library
views. Furthermore, if I right click, click advanced tag editor,
although all greyed out so I can't use it to edit, the entries I made
using right click edit are there. None of the files have ever shown any
corruption.

If that is a bug it is a very useful one :-)

No you can't. What you're suggesting will do nothing. =\

You cannot in any form fashion or way edit these in the player after
they are created. If you think you can, it's a bug in the player. If
you do try to do this anyways, you will either lose the data or
potentially corrupt the files.

True, you can't use tag editor with wav files, but you can use right
click, click edit to enter e.g. album, artist, etc. WMP recognises
those.

For the ones that don't get added to the library by scanning, try the
following: Drag them from Windows explorer to the now playing list.
Whilst they are being played, in library view, click on Now playing
in the left column, to open the now playing list in the centre. You
can then drag them to a playlist of your choice (create one if you
wish). I think that if you then edit the album info, etc. they will
appear in the appropriate library views also. In any case you would
have them in the playlist you chose to put them in.

Given the inability of WMP to tags WAV, might it be that they are in
the
library but listed as 'unknown' ?

I've tried 'Apply media information changes@ and deleting the

The folders in question are within the my music folder but I have

Any one with any idea why these files arn't going to the library?
