Re: Sync centre stops working (due to 3rd party wmp.dll??)

I've hopefully got your email address right as it hasn't come back to me?

If you're willing to take your system into your own hands and listen to my instructions *very* carefully, hit me up at zachdms at hotmail dotty com . This is a one-time offer to Trevor only. Any future interested parties should go through actual Microsoft support channels. The actual Media support channel there also has access to my supersecret magic here.

(If I felt it was ready for prime time, I'd say more. But it's been a weekend project of mine and is definitely not ready for prime time. If I ever get enough time it may evolve into something cool.)

I might have a minor secret diagnostic you can run

I think I need it Zach.

Right. Did you uninstall SatelliteTVforPC 2006? If it left the bad wmp behind, that's a problem. Delete that file, it's useless.

SatelliteTVforPC does significant registry corruption. Are you saying you did the exact "regsvr32 wmp.dll" step (and it succeeded!) and you're still having problems?

If so, I might have a minor secret diagnostic you can run, but in general you are well looking into needing to do a reinstall of Vista. SatelliteTVforPC 2006 is breathtakingly nasty.

Is this a 32bit or 64bit system? Does it have Vista Service Pack 1?

No surprises here then:

Program Files\SatelliteTVforPC\2006\Elite\wmp.dll

This is the way I'd do it: open up cmd.exe as administrator, run
cd \
dir /s /b wmp.dll
and then go check the file versions from there.

If that's too much for you, actual technical support or a local computer shop or a friend could likely quickly walk you through how to get that information.

Can you explain how I find this information?

"zachd [MSFT]" <zachd@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:ubVSvR%23MJHA.260@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What exact file versions of wmp.dll are located exactly where on your system?

If you're not able to provide this information, you would probably want to speak to actual technical support who could likely walk you through gathering the data of this nature which is absolutely critical to having an intelligent discussion of this issue.

Given that you've previously stated that you had installed a noxious piece of software, you may indeed need to reinstall Windows Vista. The lighter weight alternative would probably be to work through the questions I'm asking, but those may be a little complicated. =\

When I boot up, add or remove a USB device I get a message that Microsoft
sync center has stopped working. A Microsoft message pops up to say it has a
fix. It says the problem is to do with a third party wmp.dell. I have
followed the Microsoft instructions to the letter 3 times, but still get the
problem - what next?
