Re: Streaming video does not work

The .wma and .mp3 files both played correctly.

Most of the other filetypes on that page played properly, too (except for
..asf and .aspx - .asf file tried to open WinZip, but WinZip reported an
error; .aspx file opened another web page).

This is my home computer and I do not have a web proxy in place. I could not
find the proxy setting where you said in WMP11, nor could I find the proxy
setting in WMP help. Options - Network tab has HTTP checked off.

However, WMP Help did say something about Windows Firewall blocking UDP
(whatever that is) and to add WMP to the WIndows Firewall exception list. Is
this stream using UDP? I can't figure out how to add WMP to Win Firewall
exceptions, so I can't report whether that fixed the problem.

Yeah, I forgot ;-)

OK we need to test another file first : If you go to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316992
the try the sample files for WMA and MP3, do they play ?

Having looked at the links below in a browser, they get sent as
Windows Media Audio Redirector (WAX) file types, which I think is off
a windows server 2000 / windows media services v4

That usage is supposed to be supported in WMP11 etc.

I wonder if you have some sort of web proxy in place - is this a work
machine / PC ?

In WMP, Tools -> Options -> Network tab, click HTTP then Configure...

Is "Do not use a proxy server" selected ? Remember the setting to
change it back - then, what happens if you set it to "Do not use a
proxy server "and re-test the files ?

Cheers - Neil

generated a popup error which says "Windows Media Player encountered a
problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help."

This URL: http://wnycwm.streamguys.com/bumpers/bumper.wma
generates the same error.

This URL: http://wnycwm.streamguys.com/wnycam
looks incomplete (to me) and generates the same error.

This URL: http://www.wnyc.org/images/wmp/christieseducation.jpg
Opens a graphic in the Media Player window. If I click "Play", the clock
counts for 4 seconds, no sound comes out (I didn't expect any to come from a
jpeg).

This URL: http://www.wnyc.org/images/wmp/dalai_lama.jpg
also opens the referenced graphic and plays for 4 seconds.

Another note: There is no way to retreive a lost password if you have
changed your email address. The email address I signed up for this account
with no longer exists. I couldn't remember my password. The "Forgot password
page" only sends a new password to your old email address. Fortunately, I
eventually remembered my password.

There is no way in this forum (that I can find) to change your password, or
change yyour login to match your new email address. It is very difficult to
get into this forum if you don't use it routinely.

Hmm it works fine here (WMP7 , win 2000)

The contents of the streams are just pretty-much standard WMA audio.
What version of OS and media player do you have there ?

If you try the individual streams, which ones work or don't ?
Press CTRL + U in media player and open each one in turn :
