CD burning (and some reading software) can install "Filters" between
the OS and the hardware which can cause a range of odd effects.
You might want to look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270008 and
see if any of the software listed is something you *may* have
previously had on the PC.
Deleting the filters can often fix software/driver issues such as
those introduced by older Adaptec software, among others. But it may
also make some of that software non operational and require reinstall
of the software (which would again break WMP if you did that)
It's worth looking at the Power2Go software to see if it installs
specific ASPI drivers for the CD, some ASPI drivers only work with the
software they were installed with and may bugger up other softwares
read/write capabilities.
Discussions around this might look like the one on this page :

Guys...------------------------------------------------
This is interesting. I tried burning with ITunes and WMP. Both produced
various failures... with failures showing up later in the CD (more tracks
recorded successfully) if I used slower burning speeds... but consistantly
still failures!
However... when I burned with Power2Go... I never got ANY failures! In
other words, the burner CAN work correctly... when correctly instructed how
to work!
Clearly this is not a burner failure issue... but a Operating Sytem/Software
issue... even though the latest drivers and latest software versions are
installed.
Somebody still hasn't got their act together yet! What do you think about
that?

Well if it is my drive, this is quite annoying since this is the second time
I've replaced in around 3 weeks...
And My supplier is probably getting fed up with me asking to have a refund
or a swap... I think its time to go back to having no Combo Drives I guess...
But we are basically here to found out a solution right?

Is there any similiarities to your's, Lindan?

I can totally relate my problem with this...
But yet, there is no Answer, someone did answer me back, saying it could be
a Hardware Failure, but doubt it?
It's not unknown - commodity hardware is very cheaply built, The
CD/DVD reader in my work Dell packed up after 3 months, though I
rarely needed it and found workarounds to save the hassle of returning
the PC to Dell under warranty.
