AVI files can have 2 codecs - one for the video, and an unrelated one
used for the audio. Often that's MP3 but that's pretty much universal.
In the case of Vista, you may have u-Law "phone quality audio" codec
in use, which I'm not sure how well it's supported / available on
Vista
The GSpot program http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ can identify both
video *and* audio codecs needed for AVI playback, if you dragged the
file onto there and clicked the "1" and "2" buttons for audio, it
should list the codec needed.
Posting that here might give us a shot at suggesting how to fix you up
