Re: wmp 11 continuously reinstalls itself

After opening regedit and locating the folder, I found 4 groups of
permissions: my name (which is an administrator account), SYSTEM,
Administrators, and RESTRICTED. Only restricted doesn't have the full
control permission set, all the others do. Do I change restricted to "full
control"? (I stay away from regedit unless I have to fix something like this,
so I want to make sure I'm doing this right)
I also encountered another problem with windows media center (not player).
Other than the component registration failure error (mentioned in my previous
post) I got while running the program, I get random messages when I'm not
running WMC that say "Windows Media Center Store Update Manager stopped
working and was closed." I think there's a bigger problem with media center
than media player, and I'd like to get both fixed. Thanks.

Gotcha, that's not a reinstall, that's a reconfiguration. The difference in
words is small, the difference in fix is significant (as regards the WMP
part).
This generally should indicate that you do not have write access to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences
Could you verify that you can write to that location? If you can, it sounds
like something is resetting your preferences upon system shutdown or
startup, which would be random/a bad plan.
So right now this seems like some level of a registry permissions problem.
There's a work-around available, but I'd prefer to avoid it since that might
mask over some actual issue with your registry that you would benefit from
getting fixed.

Alright, after clicking on my quick launch icon, or any other icon, that
starts WMP, a screen shows up that says "Welcome to Windows Media Player
11"
in white text in a blue bar at the top of the window. In the rest of the
window, there are 2 options, 1 for express install, the other for custom
install. Selecting express automatically goes to the screen with 2
horizontal progress bars, indicating installation. Selecting custom goes
to
a window with various settings: collect player usage history, send player
ID
with usage data to Microsoft, view privacy policy, etc. After setting the
options and clicking next, the same screen appears with 2 horizontal
progress
bars. With both options, after the window with the 2 bars goes away, WMP
starts and functions normally. There is no specific error message screen,
the config/install screen shows up.
I also found a problem with Windows Media Center, which also came with my
computer. After playing a video and clicking "close", I get a Component
Registration Failure error, which says the following: "some of the files
needed to play radio or video are missing or corrupt. Windows Media
Center
component registration may have failed." This is the first time I've ever
seen that error since I started using it. Thanks for your help.

What's the *exact* text of the error message that you get?
Knowing that I can probably guide you to the solution. If it's the
reinstall message, it's one thing, if it's the configuration screens,
that's
another. The specific text would help me know which it is.

I'm running into some problems with media player 11. It came with my
computer, which runs Vista Home Premium SP1. But after not running it
for
a
short amount of time or after a reboot, after trying to start WMP11 I
go
straight to the "Welcome to Windows Media Player 11" installation
screen
and
must reinstall WMP to run it. I saw a similar problem with someone
running
WMP 10 on Windows XP, and a registry change fixed it ->
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsMediaPlayer
This doesn't exist in Vista, can anyone help me out here?
