I have a Mac, trying to upgrade my Windows Media player from 7.1 to 9. I am
using OS X. I download the file from the website. Then I have to unzip it
with SutffIt. It creates another file. I have to unzip that. It creates
another file. I have to unzip THAT ONE TOO! Finally it spits out a non-zip
file, and it does nothing. it's a text file that, when I open in Text
Editor, is gibberish, as if it's a program.

So how do I install this stupid update?

Did you know there's a mac WMP specific newsgroup ?
microsoft.public.windowsmedia.player.mac

It only ever gets PC based WMP questions though ;-)

First off, you should be using the Flip4Mac components for WMV
playback in Quicktime - it's pretty reliable and WMV9 on Mac is no
longer supported (though available currently for download). You can
get that from here

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

There will be no further development on WMP9 for Mac, but it sounds
like your Stuffit expanded the file to a disk image (a file with a
..dmg extension).

That should end up on your desktop, from where you can directly
install the WMP application.

Ask for Corentin on the Mac WMP discussion group above for further
instructions, as I can't replicate your issue using free Stuffit
expander and the current download image.
