Partial AVI files are not supported by the Windows AVI playback architecture and never really have been, sorry. =\

Hi,
Vista Home Premium, all updates installed.
I keep getting a problem when I open an .avi file, especially if it comes
from a .zip file.
If plays for about ten seconds then stops. After this nothing will open in
WMV, and several other programs like Window Washer won't open either.
The only remedy is to do a restart.
If it's from a ZIP program it may not have been completely unpacked
before the player tries to play the content. Unziping packed content
can take some time - often several seconds to a minute with larger
files.
What happens if you completely unzip the file to a new location, then
play it from there ? Similarly if you're trying to play content from
within an email program, save the file attachment to your hard disk
first, then try to play it.

I haven't tried that as yet, I've always just double clicked the file within the zip file. I'll give it a go and see what happens next time I get one.
These files aren't actually from emails, the email gives me the link, usually from Rapidshare.
The files are proofs of potential TV adverts and are quite large, up to 100 meg's, sometimes over that and split using HJ Split, can be over a gigabyte.
What I can't understand is why this stops other programs from working.
Thanks very much for your reply, it's much appreciated,
