Re: Vista WMP11 can't open media web links

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I don't know what problem you're referring to that you're asking about being
solved. wmp.dll was never meant to be registered by hand in Vista, if
that's your question.

Ooo Errr, thought we had a solution there and the quirky nature of this
bulletin software hadn't informed me ;-)

But no :-(

Never mind, ever the optimist that you guys will resolve this soon. I
take
it a fix in Vista SP1 isn't going to address this?

Cheers again
Hyde.

Yes, the person who said it was a bad plan is me, and I'm right - this is
one of my areas of wmp.dll . =) You're not supposed to be calling
DllRegisterServer on wmp.dll on Vista: doing so writes a couple pieces of
XP
registry data. You don't want that.

Anyways, the registry entries here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947541
will fix you up.

I've had this problem for ages with vista home premium and searched
many
times for an answer. At first changing the settings under 'set program
access and computer defaults' to media player worked but then the
problem
came back.

However, I seem to have found a sort of a solution by following these
instructions:

Run a command prompt as administrator.

Enter 'cd \windows\system32'
Enter 'regsvr32 wmp.dll'

I found this solution here
http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=700614, but there was a
reply
to these suggestions that says it's not a good idea. However, I did it
and
now the links work, but instead of streaming in media player, it
downloads
the full file to a temporary folder and then opens it. At least now
media
links will open, but it's still not behaving correctly.

Hope this helps, I'll be interested if anyone can come up with a
solution
to get streaming working again.

OK, I've scouted that out and it all looks fine so far.

Go to the Default Programs control panel. Go to Set Program Access
and
Defaults and set WMP as the default - does that fix this up?
If that doesn't fix it up, go to the Set User Defaults tool in Default
Programs and set WMP as the default there - does that fix this up?

If none of that fixes it up, export your HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT registry to
a
file, ZIP or RAR it and put it at someplace (yousendit, megaupload,
etc)
that I can look at it and I'll take a further look. Nothing looks
awry
so far.

Here you go :-)

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP11.AssocFile.MPEG\shell\play\command - is:

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:9 /Play
"%L"

"zachd [MSFT]" wrote:

That's very helpful data so far -- what's the value for:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ WMP11.AssocFile.MPEG \shell\play\command
?

OK:
What's the default value for
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg ?

That then leads us to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\%thatsamevalue%
What is the default entry under:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\%thatsamevalue%\shell
?
What is the value for:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ %thatsamevalue%\shell\%default%\command
?

Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg , there's a Content Type . What is
it
set
to?

Under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\%ThatMIMEType%
, what are the values for CLSID and Extension?

Under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\%ThatCLSID%\ProgId
, what is the default value?

What are the values under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\FileExts\.mpeg\UserChoice
?

That's the complex gist of it. =\

OK, I've made a note to myself to add this to my WMP FAQ.

Pick a file type you want to know about and I'll use that as
my
sample
file
type for the answer.

Yes, this implies I don't have it in my head right now - it's
basically a
6-8 registry key check, I just need to get some dinner right
now
so
will
get
back to this. =)

Hi

Tried that, sorry. Didn't make any difference to my setup
at
all.
In
addition, each time I opened that dialog box, the Custom
option
was
not
the
one selected. So I don't know if something is more
fundementally
broke,
or
that is intended Vista behaviour for that function.

The other option I tried was actually editing the file
associations
for
the
likes of .mpg .mpeg. avi .wmv which did already state that
WPM
was
the
associated application, but I re-saved the association just
in
case
the
view
I was given was incorrect. But that too hasn't worked.

The other odd thing about my setup (and I'm not in front of
my
Vista
laptop
as I type) is that the default programs section of one the
related
screens
(can't remember which one exactly until I get home) is
always
blank.
I'll
post back later with a more accurate description of the
screen
I'm
talking
about.

Cheers
Hyde.

The following worked for me.

Click Start and go to Default Programs

Click Continue
Then choose a configuration - select Custom (click the

media
player,
Select Windows Media Player.
Then click OK.
