Re: Vista WMP11 can't open media web links

I haven't had time to think about this, sorry. Anything that requires me to
provide my own system to reproduce the issue to understand in further depth
unfortunately has a larger time investment. I'm getting caught up, but it
usually takes a while. =\

That's very helpful data so far -- what's the value for:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg - default value is 'WMP11.AssocFile.MPEG'
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP11.AssocFile.MPEG\shell - default value is 'play'
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP11.AssocFile.MPEG\shell\play - default value is
'&Play'
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg - content type is 'video/mpeg'
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\video/mpeg - CLSID is
'{cd3afa89-b84f-48f0-9393-7edc34128127}'
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\video/mpeg - Extension is
'.mpeg'
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CD3AFA89-B84F-48F0-9393-7EDC34128127}\ProgID -
Default is 'WMP11.AssocFile.MPEG
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.mpeg
- There's no 'UserChoice' option. I have:-

Default = (value not set)
and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.mpeg\OpenWithList
-

Default = (value not set)
a = wmplayer.exe
b = AcroRd32.exe
MRUList = ab

and

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.mpeg\OpenWithProgids
-

Default = (value not set)
Elecard MPEG Player = (zero-length binary value)
WMP11.AssocFile.MPEG = (zero-length binary value)

Which also reminds me that I have Elecard installed that allows me to
play
mpeg2 UK Freeview (Free to air) recordings that I can copy off my
Topfield
PVR.

I hope the above helps. If you need me to look anything else up, then
please just let me know.

Thanks again

OK:
What's the default value for
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg ?

That then leads us to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\%thatsamevalue%
What is the default entry under:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\%thatsamevalue%\shell
?
What is the value for:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ %thatsamevalue%\shell\%default%\command
?

Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mpeg , there's a Content Type . What is it
set
to?

Under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\%ThatMIMEType%
, what are the values for CLSID and Extension?

Under
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\%ThatCLSID%\ProgId
, what is the default value?

What are the values under:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
\Explorer\FileExts\.mpeg\UserChoice
?

That's the complex gist of it. =\

Oooo, many thanks. Lets pick .mpeg then as a reference point :-)

Off to work now (UK time).

OK, I've made a note to myself to add this to my WMP FAQ.

Pick a file type you want to know about and I'll use that as my
sample
file
type for the answer.

Yes, this implies I don't have it in my head right now - it's
basically a
6-8 registry key check, I just need to get some dinner right now so
will
get
back to this. =)

Hi

Tried that, sorry. Didn't make any difference to my setup at
all.
In
addition, each time I opened that dialog box, the Custom option
was
not
the
one selected. So I don't know if something is more fundementally
broke,
or
that is intended Vista behaviour for that function.

The other option I tried was actually editing the file
associations
for
the
likes of .mpg .mpeg. avi .wmv which did already state that WPM
was
the
associated application, but I re-saved the association just in
case
the
view
I was given was incorrect. But that too hasn't worked.

The other odd thing about my setup (and I'm not in front of my
Vista
laptop
as I type) is that the default programs section of one the
related
screens
(can't remember which one exactly until I get home) is always
blank.
I'll
post back later with a more accurate description of the screen
I'm
talking
about.

Cheers
Hyde.

The following worked for me.

Click Start and go to Default Programs
Then, select Set Program Access and Computer Default
Click Continue
Then choose a configuration - select Custom (click the double
arrow
beside
Custom). Scroll down the list and under choose a default media
player,
Select Windows Media Player.
Then click OK.

Hi

if I click any hyperlink on any web page to any media file
(eg
wma,
mpg,
mpeg etc. etc.) I get a new tab displayed in IE7 saying:-

-------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems

More information
----------------------------------------------------------

I've tried setting WMP11 as default player for these files
types,
but
it
still won't open WMP11 and play the file. If I use the IE
right
click
oprion
and 'save target as' and save it to my local machine,
double
clicking
the
saved file opens WMP11 just fine. It's only links in web
pages
that
don't
work.

Any ideas folks?

Cheers
Hyde
