OK first off I'd wonder if you'd installed vista ultimate over the
previously installed home edition on the PC. I'm not very trusting of
"upgrade" installs as I often worry about crumbs of the old OS left
behind.
Also in Services (Cotrol Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services) is
TrustedInstaller service set to run automatically rather than (say)
disabled ? That might have some impact on your ability to select
options there.
Finally, there seem to be lots of good reports about this site's list
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html
As noted there, you'd have to run the registry merge as administrator,
usually right-clicking the .reg file and choosing 'run as
administrator' would bring up the UAC prompt and allow that to be run.
The registry entries listed for WMV files seem reasonable without
checking in detail, so it might be one route to try - though always
back up your registry using regedit before taking any modifications
like this.

Tried that, sorry. Didn't make any difference to my setup at all. In
addition, each time I opened that dialog box, the Custom option was not the
one selected. So I don't know if something is more fundementally broke, or
that is intended Vista behaviour for that function.
The other option I tried was actually editing the file associations for the
likes of .mpg .mpeg. avi .wmv which did already state that WPM was the
associated application, but I re-saved the association just in case the view
I was given was incorrect. But that too hasn't worked.
The other odd thing about my setup (and I'm not in front of my Vista laptop
as I type) is that the default programs section of one the related screens
(can't remember which one exactly until I get home) is always blank. I'll
post back later with a more accurate description of the screen I'm talking
about.

The following worked for me.
Click Start and go to Default Programs
Then, select Set Program Access and Computer Default
Click Continue
Then choose a configuration - select Custom (click the double arrow beside
Custom). Scroll down the list and under choose a default media player,
Select Windows Media Player.
Then click OK.

What other players are or were on the system? Several of them (and

Hi
if I click any hyperlink on any web page to any media file (eg wma,
mpg,
mpeg etc. etc.) I get a new tab displayed in IE7 saying:-
-------------------------------------------------------------
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.
What you can try:

More information
----------------------------------------------------------
I've tried setting WMP11 as default player for these files types, but
it
still won't open WMP11 and play the file. If I use the IE right click
oprion
and 'save target as' and save it to my local machine, double clicking
the
saved file opens WMP11 just fine. It's only links in web pages that
don't
work.
Any ideas folks?
