how can i convert a *.mov file into one that wmp can use?
Expression media encoder can read Quicktime (MOV) files and convert
them - a lot of other tools either cost $$ or don't have that support
http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/trialfaq.aspx?key=encoder
The Microsoft Expression program has a free trial that will let you
convert .mov to .wmv, among several other things. However, if you need
to use it after the free trial expires, that program costs over $500.
If I were determined to convert the .mov files to some other format, I
would use the new flv/swf format. The complete flash encoding software
is expensive, but you can get a Moyea Flash Video MX encoder at
http://www.flash-video-mx.com/ for only about $49.99, and it too has a
trial period. The flv/swf format is now perhaps the most used video
format on the web. Many major sites that once used Real, Microsoft, or
Apple formats are now using it. These include YouTube, MySpace, major
news sites, etc. It can produce videos of anything from low to very
high resolution, unlike the older swf only file format. The Moyea
encoder will allow input video in the mov and many other formats. You
can delete or replace any audio if desired. You can crop and process
the image in several ways, if desired. The swf is only a container
player file and can be customized in many ways as desired. When you
finish encoding, both a swf container file and a flv flash video file
are produced as output. On a web page or local computer, you just link
to the swf container file. The flv file must also be in the same
directory as the swf container file, and it automatically causes the
flv to download to the browser temporary cache.
Unlike the Microsoft Expression program, which appparently outputs
converted videos to Microsoft formats, there are many other programs
that will output as many formats, not just Microsoft ones. Most of the
pay programs have a free trial and often cost even less than the Moyea
program for flash.
The reason that flv/swf is now so popular is that it works on nearly
all modern computers, and the basic flash program comes installed on
most new computers and is free. It works on many different OSs, while
WMP 10 and 11 are designed to work only on a Windows XP or Vista OS.
Many other players such as Real, QT, and Winamp are not installed on
many computers.
