Do you have tons of MPEG filters on both systems?
Again, using a DirectShow Filter manager tool should fix you up pretty
easily here if you're going to be running ten sets of MPEG decoders. Using
ten sets of MPEG decoders is probably universally going to be seen as a bad
plan by anyone/everyone.
Microsoft doesn't disable this feature. That would be a boneheaded move.
However, you can easily plug in other software that brokenly insists that it
should be used -- but then doesn't work. That *should* be the exact problem
you're having. Plugging in more codecs will do nothing. Your options would
be to either remove the extra codecs or use a filter manager.

I'm Sooo glad I'm not alone this issue with WMP. I just found out this
morning on my second system, which has Vista Ultimate 32-Bit installed on
it, I'm having the same problem Not being able to play a simple DVD movie
in the Vista Media Player. Great!! Now I have "Two" Vista systems that I
can't play DVD's in the Vista Media Player.
I'm thinking microsoft maybe disabling this feature in some Vista
operating system software.

Well my problem "WMP11 / Vista wmv - no video - sound is ok" is so
similar. Works one day the one day not at all.
You commented on the number of filter/codecs I had installed as well.
Seems to me like WMP is seriously flawed.
My system ships from HP with HP QuickPlay (Cyberlink core engine and
decoders) and WMP. I also install Propix Cameramate Realtime Video for
converting some of my videos. All worked then one day 'bang' WMP refused
to display video content from .wmv and DVDs.
As I'm not too keep on the HP Quickply, after trying every hint and
suggestion I could find (regserve etc etc) I was force to install
PowerDVD Pro Suite.
I bet you I'm not different to *many* people out there. Cyberlink,
Quickplay, VLC can all handle using the filters/codecs so why can't WMP.
Like I said WMPs design must be seriously flawed. In fact it is on the
pure simple fact that under Vista there is no way to reinstall/repair it
when it is broken. If MS are intent on pissing customers off they they
are sure going about the right way of doing it. No I'm not and MS
basher, infact probably totally the opposite BUT serious criticism where
it is due I will do.

insane )
