Re: Adding 5th monitor crashes media player every time.

Here's a followup!

I opened an official tech support case on this. MS Tech support ( a nice
young man working the night shift in India with a caller ID from Ohio) found
two hotfixes. These hotfixes led to non-microsoft applications (Pinnacle
Studio 11, Roxio's DVD player, Apple Quicktime) to not crash, but to display
normal moving 2-d video when more than 4 monitros were enabled.

The bad news is that any Windows media player attempt to play a DVD or any
other video would now crash Vista altogether. Pop a video DVD in the drive
and down Vista goes. Same with Windows Media Center. Previously it would
just crash media player app or just the app that tried to do moving video.
So, progress of a sort. Non MS apps work, but usual things someone might do
make a bigger mess than previously.

So, third party applications which did not work in the past, with the two
hotfixes (improving EVR.dll) I can limp along.

Microsoft then handed the case over to the Windows Media Player team for
futher support.

There, they promptly analyzed the crash dump, and a very competent English
speaking lady from China with a Washington DC caller ID let me know that in
the soon to be released service pack 1 this known problem was resolved, was
not Nvidia nor ATI specific but indeed a bug in a few Microsoft DLL's and
when it is released soon let her know if the case needs to be reopned. If I
need a fix attempt sooner than that the service pack 1 release candidate
might help. (I'm not going to do that, I'd rather limp along with known
working if degraded functionality for a bit more then deal with it once --
here's hoping it will be dealt with...)

So, stay tuned....

This is something you would want to follow up on actual technical support
with. Not having five monitors myself (well, at one location), I didn't
have direct experience here. Actual technical support should know more
about this/possibly be able to explain more, but I believe you'll be hitting
a brick wall (as you are now) with this scenario, with no work-around other
than "don't do that" at this time.

If there was any fix to be released, it would likely have to due to product
support asking for it. You or I can't directly make that happen. =\

Thanks for that. I was all but certain the problem was a hard coded max
monitor constant burned into the directX 10 code designed to save memory
addressing space (read- not so careful vid buffer managment design) that
does
2d video windows, and now that you are having the same problem in the ATI
world that we have in the NVidia world that settles it.

Another MS credentialed poster early on called our plight with this bug a
'fringe' problem and suggested discussion with the video card driver
authors
as the cause of the problem. Too bad he was wrong, really -- at least
driver
authors fix bugs and do releases on a quicker time scale!

It's a riot for me really, when the same machine boots XP or Linux all the
monitors come alive. The customer likes to run those 'downgrade'
commercials
by the competition on the monitors he can't use when I show up. Yup,
feels
good.

Disabled 4 and left 4 enabled, all worked fine.
I am in contact with ATI Support.
Will keep you posted
