Re: Media Player 11

No, installing WMP wouldn't be necessary to check for failing startup
drivers such as video or audio that are typically used by WMP.

Since it's basically new, have you had chance to ask Dell about the
possibility that there are updated driver software for the PC ? Or
windows update often has drivers which vendors are shipping old
version of ?

Even on new PCs, burn-in problems are quite common as the hardware
settles in - minor connection issues like cabling and RAM, or sudden
jolts or moving the equipment can result in much the same symptoms in
some cases.

Hi, Neil,

Thank you so much for your help.

My computer is brand new Dell OptiPlex 745. I got it for 4 months.

Currently, I have uninstall WMP11. My computer works now. I don't need to
install WMP11 again to create Boot Log, right?

Thanks a lot,

I can't explain why this only happened after installing WMP11 unless
something else was updated at the same time. Problems at boot are
normally caused by device driver software failing to load - this is
software which typically operates things like the display / graphics
card, sound card and so on.

The only real way to diagnose it is to run windows and use a boot log,
then investigate the boot log to look for failures to load various
things. It's likely the problem's still there and is being masked by
some other startup option, so it may still be possible to check.

This page has details on how to create a boot log on startup, and
where to find the resulting file.

I could take a look I guess, although it may not be obvious without
sitting at the PC what exactly's failing. One possibility might even
be the hard disk is on its way out and it's coincidence that WMP was
most recently installed - about how old is the PC and hard disk ?

I didn't install any software recently. I just did update Media Player 9 to
Media Player 11. What I did is that I openned Windows Media Play > Help >
Check for Player Update, then I following the instration screen to finish the
update.

After then, a screen has been popped up and said that you should restart
your computer. Then I click OK to restart the computer. After that, my
computer could not start Windows XP to get login screen.

How I uninstall WMP11, I start Windows XP by using Safe Mode, then, I
uninstall WMP11. After I unistall WMP11, it returned to WMP9, which I have
before. Then, I reboot my computer, I could start Windows XP.

Do you know why it happenned? Can I update to WMP11?

Thanks a lot,

Is anybody know why it happen?

Another question, after I unistall Media Player 11, I noticed that a program
called Windows Media Format 11 runtime is there when I checked it in Add or
Remove Programs. Do I have to remove the program? or I can keep it?

You can remove that if you're only using WMP9 - it's installed as part
of WMP11 install.

I'm not sure what's happening with the Startup though. Usually failure
to start is indicated by a bad driver or other startup program - WMP
isn't in the initial startup list so it should never cause that.

Is there anything else you've recently installed ? And how did you get
to the point where you could start it to uninstall WMP11 if it won't
start at all - I'm trying to work out which part of windows bootup
isn't working.
