Re: viewing .asf files with WMP 11.0 for XP

I think possibly the simplest way to repair that would be to put DivX
on there - it should enable MPEG4 playback of pretty much all types

http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/

That's quite a common codec for downloaded AVIs too, so it's generally
useful to have. There's no cost for just the codec part of DivX.

The MP4S code, now I come to look it up, should be DivX 4 (I thought
it was MS MPEG for some reason last night) and DivX6 is backwards
compatible with that.

Neil,
Yes now that I know what to look for in WMP I do see the FFDShow in it. And
now when I open these JVC files with WMP 11 I no longer get the "codec
missing" message and I can hear the audio but still no video is shown.

This is the version that I installed. ffdshow-rev1746_20080104.zip

Once that's installed, is there any change in playback behaviour in
media player ? FFDShow makes itself accessible to media player
(there's actually a menu option appears on the More Options -> DVD ->
Advanced section of media player)

I installed the program but I don't see how to open files with it or use it
as a player. It has tons of features but without reading a book on it I
can't figure it out. Can you give me a quick pointer or test my file?

My JVC digital camcorder can save "email" sized video clips to the SD card so
they can be emailed for viewing. I can't get WMP to open these. WMP says I
need a codec and gives me this message.

You've encountered error message C00D10D1 while using Windows Media Player.
The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.

Codec is missing
Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio
or video portion of the file) because the Microsoft ISO MPEG-4 Video v1.0
(MP4S) codec is not installed on your computer.

The missing codec might be available to download from the Internet. To
search for the Microsoft ISO MPEG-4 Video v1.0 (MP4S) codec, see
WMPlugins.com.

WMplugins.com doesn't have a download file for 11.0 on it. I have installed
several codecs (G.726, etc) and even tried to open them with VLC.

I can hear the sound but no video when I open the file with VLC.

I used AVIcodec which tells me the following information about the file.

File : 86 KB (0.00 B), duration: 0:00:00, type: ASF, 1 audio
stream(s), quality: 2 %, ,

Video : 0.00 B, 144 Kbps, 0.0 fps, 160*120 (4:3), MP4S = ISO MPEG-4
Video V1, Supported

Audio : 0.00 B, 16 Kbps, 8000 Hz, 1 channels, 0x45 = G.726, , ,
Supported

I have searched the web and this site and don't see a solution. JVC hasn't
supplied me with the answer either.

Can any tell me how to get the proper video codec needed?
