Re: Weird Error in Media Center for Windows Vista, this one is str

Hi mate,

I downloaded GSpot but i'm not sure how to use it, i did manage to get it to
display all codecs on the system and i can't see any problems (highlighted in
red)

I recently reinstalled Windows Vista due to a problem with the OS, but in
Media Center i would set up my library to display all my Movies which are in
..avi file format, i could play them without problem but it doesn't show
thumbnails of the movies. I then installed WinAvi Video Converter so i could
convert my movies or my .dvr-ms tv shows if needed. but again when accessing
my library it could see my movies with thumnails now showing a frame of the
movie but when it comes to playing them i get a message,

"Codec missing or not installed.

Is WinAvi Video Converter not compalible or am a having another problem i am
not aware of, this is really confusing.

You say not to install codecs on to Windows Vista, but when i install
software like WinAvi or InterVideo WinDVD Platinum 8 they install codecs
relevent for playback or conversion i cant win.

I like Windows Vista Ultimate it is a vast improvement over Windows XP and i
have read and ignored people bad mouthing the software online but does this
problems not come down to Application Compatibility that Microsoft on
numerous occasions said it should fix, or is it down to third party software
developers of Video Playback software and codec creation that are too lazy to
test the software fully before general release to the public?

Thans for you help so far.

Hi Neil,

Gspot is a good peice of software but it only tell you which codecs are
missing or installed.

I've lost the original post (and you've not quoted it here) so I'm not
sure what the question was. GSpot will not only list installed codecs,
it will also list which specific codec is required for audio and/or
video playback of an individual (or batch) AVI file.

What codec packs are fully compatible with Media Center in Windows Vista (VMC)

I don't recommend you use codec packs, particularly on Vista where
they're pretty much untested and can break lots of stuff in the new OS
environment.

I have the latest version of Vista Codec Package but that doesn't help,

So, installing random codec packs really *is* pointless then ;-))

I did try AVI Codec Package+ but this caused COM Surrogate errors to be
displayed all the time, i know this is caused by incomplatible codecs but
which ones can i use for decent usabliity?

You see, you're experiencing exactly the problems I expect, which is
why I don't recommend codec packs. The next most likely event will be
WMP won't be able to run, and as it can't be uninstalled on Vista
you'll end up with a coplete OS reinstall.

Please post the original codec listed by GSpot as required for
playback and I'll see if I can find a playback component that doesn't
compromise your machines performance and stability.

HTH
Cheers - Neil
