I wouldn't expect there to be any progress regards making code changes
without some strong external corporate advocate pushing that through, or
enough people taking their issue to actual product support that product
support advocates for it.
WMP is being overly helpful for you. You can ignore that. If it wasn't
helpful and didn't do this, that would be equally frustrating to people who
did want something to happen here, and they actually would need to take
positive actions (as opposed to simply ignoring something) in order to get
their situation dealt with.
The feedback has been passed along.

Has any progress been made regarding getting an option to have WMP to
ignore
USB insertions?
For my usage, as I have no portable players, there is no reason whatsoever
for WMP to want to do anything with a USB device until explicitly told to.
My solution had been to not use WMP.
