Re: DVDs won't play.

I just didn't want to make any assumptions because that would waste your
time. Remember that I'm trying to be psychic here about your remote system
that I have no knowledge of. It's educated guesswork. =)

According to WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu tool, what
DVD/MPEG filtesr are listed?

There's many ways it could be a problem with the graphics card and yet
perform differently in different players. I guarantee you this.

The reason I ask about it working before but not now was to be crystal-clear
that the exact same WMP was working before. As you've probably noticed,
there's not many settings you can actually change on this in WMP here. You
could certainly reinstall WMP if you wanted, but it probably won't do
anything no matter how hard you try because the problem is most likely the
video card driver or potentially the DVD decoder (less likely).

What specific driver version are you using? When you reinstall your OS, you
probably reset the driver versions on the system, if I recall correctly.
Sure seems worth checking out in good faith. =)

I apologize for not having great answers for you. =)

I'm not implying it worked before. I'm saying it flat out. Before I did a
PC
Recovery using the recovery DVDs I created when I purchasing the laptop,
Windows Media Player played ALL .mpg files, played DVDs, and my Creative
Video Converter had no problem converting ANY video files to .wmv format.
I
doubt very much that the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator for Mobile just
happened to suddenly need upgrading at the exact same time that I
reinstalled
my OS. Moreover, as I've said repeatedly, DVD playback works fine on my
laptop and the quicktime player plays all the .mpg files that Media Player
won't. In short, it's only Media Player that isn't working the way it's
supposed to. If it was a problem with the graphics card, I doubt I'd be
able
to play DVDs on two separate software players (Intervideo DVD Player and
HP
quickstart) but not on Media Player.

Again, all of that would have been visible if you'd read the thread in its
entirety.

Right, all of them have different Macrovision implementations, if I
recall
correctly. I would not be surprised if Microsoft, which people enjoy
suing
much the same way you and me might enjoy "having breakfast", has a more
paranoid implementation of that support. This is especially true in that
you imply that this worked "before", and WMP certainly doesn't change
between those two states.

Your video card drivers, however, most probably did. Which video card do
you have? Which driver version do you have?

If it is a problem in Windows Media Player to you - where would you feel
that issue lies?

I'm not using any cable to connect the monitor to the pc. I'm on a
laptop.
I'm quite certain that the problem has NOTHING to do with hardware as
all
of
these things worked fine two weeks ago before I had to re-format my
hard
drive and re-install everything on my laptop because of a system hang
that
I
couldn't fix. Moreover. ALL of these things (playing DVDs, playing ALL
.mpg
files, etc.) work just fine using other software (Intervideo DVD,
quicktime
player, divx player, and Realplayer). The problem is clearly with
Windows
Media Player.

Oftentimes vendors will have updates available on their web site that

through to get them up there.

What connection cable type are you using to connect the PC to the
monitor?

I'm on an HP Pavilion laptop with Intel Graphics accelerator Media
card. I
tried to do a windows update and search for hardware updates but
none
was
available. Besides, the DVDs play fine in Intervideo's native DVD
player
that
I have installed so I have a hard time believing the video card
could
be
the
problem. It's the same video card with the same drivers that was
installed
before I did the PC Recovery and everything worked fine.

Did you try updating the driver for your video card?

I recently had to do a PC recovery as a result of a system hang.
When I
got
everything up and running, I found that Media Player would no
longer
play
many .mpg files and gave the following error message when
attempting
to
play
DVDs in Media Player: "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD
because
there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD
drive,
decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for
your

I downloaded the Intervideo DVD XPack, which is supposed to make
it
possible
to play DVDs in Media Player. However, I still get the same error
message
when attempting to play DVDs. I know there is nothing wrong with
the
hardware
or the codecs because DVDs play fine in the Intervideo DVD player
and
.mpg
files that won't play in Media Player will play just fine in
RealPlayer
and
Quicktime player. I am also now unable to convert tv tuner
recordings
from
.mpg format to .wmv to be played on my Creative Zen using the
Creative
video
converter included with the Zen. This also was not a problem
before
the
PC
Recovery. What is wrong with Media Player and how do I fix it?
