It sounds like your registry is corrupt. Does running chkdsk report any
errors?

Look for "Error 5" in the updspapi.log - that should point out the
corrupt/inaccessible registry keys on your system.

First, because of the original message I got when starting WMP, looking
for this error on forums I remark that I had WMP 11 (ref. add/remove
pgrm) and try to repair this by registering the 2 DLL's (not ok), by
removing any WMP 11 entries (not OK), by removing also WMP hotfixes
(not OK).
Then, I try to run the WMP9 setup (not ok cause higher version
detected).
I go then for WMP10 setup (not ok, errors don't know anymore).
Try finally the WMP11 setup (got light message it can complete setup
:-?)
So, I saw a procedure to run a part of the WMP 11 (by extracting
WMFDIST11.EXE and run it). There, also it can go to the end.
Hereby a part of the WMFDIST11.LOG (with some Errors and Access
Denied):

I've try to access those reg key but it seems I cannot access them at
all.
It becomes really crazy to understand that the system changes all those
things (for what?)
